What is a UTR number, and should you share it?

A UTR number identifies a single bank transfer so it can be traced. What it is, when sharing it helps, when to hide it, and why it's no substitute for a PIN.

What a UTR number is

UTR stands for Unique Transaction Reference. It's a reference number attached to a bank transfer so that the banks on both sides, and you, can identify that one payment. For UPI payments it's usually a 12-digit number, sometimes labelled UPI reference, UPI transaction ID or ref no. depending on the app. Other kinds of bank transfer have their own reference numbers.

You'll find it on the payment confirmation screen, in your payment app's history, and often in the transaction description on your bank statement.

When sharing it helps

A UTR is useful precisely because it lets someone find a payment. Share it when:

  • A seller or landlord can't see your payment and wants to trace it.
  • You're raising a complaint with your bank or payment app about a failed or pending transfer.
  • A business asks for it to match your payment to an invoice or order.

On its own, a UTR is a reference, not a key. It identifies a payment; it doesn't let anyone move money from your account.

When to hide it

There's still no reason to post it publicly. A UTR ties a specific payment, amount and time to you, and in the wrong hands it can make a fake message or call sound more convincing, because the caller can quote a real transaction. Hide it when you share a payment screenshot in a group, a review, a complaint on social media, or anywhere the person reading it doesn't need to trace the payment.

  1. Open Blur UPI screenshot and add the screenshot.
  2. Transaction / UTR number is covered by default, along with UPI IDs and phone numbers.
  3. Untick it only for the version you send to the person who needs to trace the payment.
  4. Export. You can make two versions from the same screenshot: one for the payee, one for anywhere else.

In bank statements, long reference numbers can be hidden with the Reference numbers option in Redact bank statement.

What never to share

Your UPI PIN, OTPs, card CVV and net banking password are never needed to trace or confirm a payment. Anyone asking for them alongside a UTR, whatever they say, is not checking a payment.

If a payment is genuinely stuck, contact your bank or payment app through its official app or website, not through a number someone sends you. See also How to blur your UPI ID in a payment screenshot.

Questions

Can someone take money from my account with my UTR number?

A UTR only identifies a payment that already happened. Moving money needs your PIN, OTP or login, which you should never share.

Is the UTR the same as the UPI transaction ID?

Apps label it differently, and some show more than one reference. If someone asks for the UTR, the 12-digit UPI reference number is usually what they mean; ask if you're unsure.
