Is it safe to use online PDF tools?

Do it now: free, in your browser, nothing uploaded.

Many online PDF tools work by uploading your file to their server, processing it there and sending a result back. For a menu or a flyer, that's fine. For a bank statement, an ID or a medical report, it means a copy of your document now exists on someone else's computer, under their retention policy and their security.
Other tools run entirely in your browser: the page loads the code, and your file is processed on your own device without being sent anywhere. For private documents, that's the safer design.
What to check before using one
- Does it upload? Look for a clear statement on the page or in the privacy policy. Vague wording like we take security seriously doesn't answer it.
- How long are files kept? If it uploads, the policy should say when files are deleted.
- Who runs it? A named company with contact details and a privacy policy is easier to hold to account.
- Does it really redact? Some editors only draw a shape on top, leaving the text in the file.
- Does it need an account? Signing up links your documents to your identity.
How to tell whether a tool uploads your file
If you're comfortable with your browser's developer tools, open the Network tab before adding a file. Then add a test document, not a real one, and watch for a large request leaving the page as the file is processed. A tool that works in the browser won't send your file's contents anywhere.
A simpler signal: tools that upload usually show an upload progress bar, and processing takes longer for large files on slow connections.
Redacting without uploading
Blur Document runs entirely in your browser, needs no account, and is free. Files are never uploaded.
- Open Redact PDF and drop in your file (up to 50 pages and 25 MB, including password-protected PDFs).
- Accept the detected personal details and draw boxes over anything else.
- Export. Pages are rebuilt from pixels, so the covered text is gone, and metadata is removed.
- Optional: check the result with the PDF Redaction Checker, which also runs in your browser.

Questions
Are online PDF tools that delete files after an hour safe?
Safer than ones that keep files, but your document still left your device. For sensitive documents, prefer a tool that processes files locally.
Is a desktop PDF app safer than a website?
Not automatically. What matters is whether your file is sent anywhere and whether the redaction actually removes the text.
