Bank statement for a visa: what to hide and what to keep

Visa applications ask for bank statements to show funds, not every detail of your life. What usually has to stay, what you might hide, and why to check first.

Check the requirements before you redact anything

A bank statement for a visa is there to show that you have enough money and that the account is really yours. Requirements differ by country, visa type and visa centre, and some ask for statements that are unaltered, stamped or issued directly by the bank. A redacted statement may be refused in those cases.

So the first step isn't redacting, it's reading the document checklist for your application, or asking the embassy, consulate or visa centre. This guide covers general practice only, not the rules of any particular country.

What usually needs to stay visible

DetailWhy it usually stays
Your name and addressLinks the account to you and your application
Bank name, branch and statement periodShows where and when the funds were held
Balances and transaction amountsThis is the evidence of funds
Account number, at least partlyLets the account be identified or verified

Hiding balances or large deposits defeats the purpose of the statement, and unexplained gaps can raise more questions than they answer.

What you might reasonably hide

Where the rules allow it, these details often have nothing to do with your funds:

  • Card numbers in card transaction lines.
  • Other people's UPI IDs, account numbers and phone numbers in transfer descriptions.
  • Customer ID or CIF, which identifies you across the bank.
  • Your email and phone number, if they're printed and not required.

Hide only what isn't evidence. If in doubt, leave it in and ask.

How to do it

  1. Open Redact bank statement and add the statement PDF.
  2. Untick Bank account number, Address and anything else the application needs. Leave Amounts and balances unticked.
  3. Keep Card numbers and UPI IDs ticked, and accept or reject each highlight individually.
  4. Export, then compare the result with the original page by page so nothing required is covered.

The export is rebuilt from pixels, so its text can't be selected or searched. If the visa centre requires a digitally signed or text-searchable PDF from the bank, send the original instead.

Where you can't redact, protect the original in transit. See How to send documents securely.

Questions

Can I hide transactions I don't want to explain?

That's not advisable. Visa officers look at the pattern of funds, and hiding entries can look like concealment. Hide identifiers, not transactions.

Should I hide my account number for a visa?

Usually not. Many applications need the account to be identifiable. Follow your checklist, and ask the visa centre if it's unclear.
