Blur Document vs Adobe Acrobat for redacting PDFs

Acrobat Pro redacts the text layer and keeps PDFs searchable. Blur Document is free, needs no account and never uploads your file. Here is when to use each.

Facts about Adobe Acrobat checked against its own website on

Short answer: if you need a redacted PDF that stays searchable, or you already pay for Acrobat Pro, use Acrobat. Its redaction removes marked text from the text layer and leaves the rest of the document selectable, and it sits next to editing, e-signing and team tools.

If you just need to hide an account number, an ID or a few names before sending a file, and you don't have Acrobat Pro, Blur Document does it free in your browser with no account and no upload. It finds personal data for you, but the exported PDF is rebuilt as images, so its text is not searchable.

How each one redacts

Acrobat Pro's Redact tool marks text, images or whole pages, then removes them when you apply the redactions. Adobe also offers Find text and redact for words and patterns, and a Sanitize option for metadata, comments and other hidden content. Because only the marked parts are removed, the rest of the PDF keeps its real text.

Blur Document rebuilds every page from pixels. Text under a box is gone, metadata is stripped, and the output is read again for anything still legible. The trade-off: the exported PDF's text is no longer selectable or searchable.

Whichever you use, check the result. The free PDF Redaction Checker looks for text still sitting under boxes, plus metadata, comments and form fields.

Where Acrobat is the better choice

  • Searchable output: court filings, records requests and archives often need text that can still be searched and copied.
  • Long documents: Blur Document opens up to 50 pages per PDF. Acrobat is built for much larger files.
  • Everything else PDF: editing text, e-signing, forms and shared team workflows.
  • You already pay for it: if Acrobat Pro is on your machine, its redaction tool is a solid choice.

Where Blur Document fits

  • No Acrobat Pro: redaction is not in Acrobat Standard or the free online editor, and Blur Document costs nothing.
  • Files that shouldn't leave your device: pages are processed in your browser and never uploaded. See privacy.
  • Photos, scans and screenshots: OCR reads phone photos of documents, and you can blur screenshots and images too.
  • Quick jobs: tick fields from a template or let it find emails, phone numbers, card numbers and IDs for you.

Questions

Can I redact a PDF in the free Adobe Acrobat Reader?

Adobe lists redaction in Acrobat Pro and Studio plans, not in Acrobat Standard, and its free online editor covers annotating and markup. Check Adobe's plans page for the current details. Blur Document redacts PDFs free in your browser.

Is Blur Document's redaction as secure as Acrobat's?

Both aim to remove the content, not just cover it. Acrobat removes it from the text layer; Blur Document rebuilds the page as an image, so nothing under a box survives. Either way, test the output with the [PDF Redaction Checker](/redaction-checker).

Why isn't my PDF searchable after using Blur Document?

Pages are exported as images so that hidden text can't be recovered. If you need searchable output, Acrobat Pro or another tool that redacts the text layer is the better fit.
